Alderman George Holloway JP

on the occasion of his 80th Birthday

"I began life with advocating the six points of the Charter: Universal suffrage, vote by ballot, annual parliaments, abolition of property qualification, payment of members and equal electoral districts. Some of those objects have been attained. I have seen the abolition of the corn laws and church rates, universal and free education and the creation of the modern Democracy. The people now possess the power to govern themselves and I hope they will use the power wisely and well, realising the responsibility placed in their hands. ... I sometimes fear they do not sufficiently appreciate those privileges. Still I have full confidence in the people and believe that there is still a 'good time coming' for my neighbours in this dear Old Town of Kidderminster"
